This Must Be The Place

from “Speaking in Tongues”, Talking Heads, 1983.

Our travels take us from place to place and of course you need somewhere to stay wherever you happen to be. Accommodations can be good or bad, luxurious or modest, exotic or mundane.

To date on our travels we have not had any bad lodging experiences and we hope it stays that way. More importantly we have had some really rather good experiences, and so here we present some of our favourite places that we have stayed in and just why we loved them so much.

Eastin Grand Hotel

flag-thailandWhere is it? Sathorn, Bangkok, Thailand.

Why did we love it? This hotel has great views of the city from the higher floors and the executive level rooms provide access to the lounge where you can enjoy breakfast, all day tea and coffee, and sundown cocktails and canapes included in your room rate. And the staff are great too, always friendly and helpful.

Sho’s Apartment (Airbnb)

flag-japanWhere is it? Shinjuku Gyoenmae, Tokyo, Japan.

Why did we love it? This is far and away the best Airbnb apartment we’ve stayed in. Regardless of the fact it is small – as most Japanese apartments are – it was well laid out and had everything you needed. In addition Sho was a great host, making sure everything was OK and happy to help if he could. Plus the fact the apartment is in the quiet but funky area of Shinjuku Gyoenmae yet only minutes from the action of the big city.

Raffles Hotel

flag-philippinesWhere is it? Makati, Manila, Philippines.

Why did we love it? This is a very classy top-end hotel with wonderful suites and polite and attentive staff who look after all your needs and provide an exemplary service. We also enjoyed the art tour they conducted as part of Philip’s birthday, as did we the great a la carte food at the Spectrum restaurant.
